40 groups join Sandugo Street Dancing
July 13, 2006
It’s definite. Forty groups will join this year’s Sandugo Street
Dancing on July 23.
The Bohol Sandugo Foundation, Inc. (BSFI) will again make a mark
in its 18-year history with the most number of participants to
dance in the main thoroughfares of Tagbilaran City.
To comprise the bulk of participants are private learning
institutions such as University of Bohol, Bohol Institute of
Technology, Philippine Maritime Institute, Holy Trinity School,
St. Therese School, and Holy Spirit School, public elementary
schools such as Bool, Booy, Booy South, Cabawan, City Central,
Cogon, Eastern Cogon, Dampas, Dao, Manga, San Isidro, Taloto,
Tiptip, and Ubujan, and public seconday schools such as City
Science, Cogon Night, Manga, and Mansasa. Aside from organizations
and business firms such as Bohol Quality, Bohol Association of
Hotels, Resorts, and Restaurants (BAHRR), Bohol Bankers
Association, also manifesting their support are Local Government
Units of Baclayon, Catigbian and Garcia-Hernandez.
The heavy turn-out of participation resulted from the novel idea
of letting institutions participate in the street merriment
without compelling them to perform the ritual in the CPG Sports
Complex, thus avoiding huge expenses. The support of the Interim
City Schools Division thru Dr. Elpidio Jala was also indispensable
towards this end.
Another milestone in this year’s edition is the participation of
champions of other province’s festivals, dubbing it as the
“Showdown of Champions”. The champions of festivals (Masskara (Bacolod
City), Dinagyang (Iloilo City), Atiatihan (Kalibo, Aklan), and
Mantawi (Mandaue City) will again marvel crowd with their towering
rendition, as preluded last year. Newest additions to this year’s
elite performers are the grand winners of Basakanon Festival (Cebu
City), Hambabalud Festival (Jimalalud, Oriental Negros) and
Sinanduloy Festival (Tangub City).
Dr. Cecilio Putong National High School and the Munipality of
Panglao will serve as local counterparts depicting Bohol’s Sandugo
Festival. The main performers will perform the ritual.
This shift from a province to a nation-wide scale is mapped out to
afford spectators with the country’s finest festivals without
resorting to island hopping.
Tailing the main performers during the street performance are
well-designed floats from Policarpio Dano High School (Nueva
Fuerza, Carmen), Island City Mall, M. Lhuillier Pawnshop, Boholano
Group of Washington, D.C. (BOGWAS), Chocolate Hills Lady Jaycees.
Association of Bohol Executives National Agencies (ABENA), and
Boholanos in Honglong Group. Also joining are the floats of Miss
Bohol International, Mrs. Bohol International and Miss Gay Bohol
Sandugo.
The contingents will assemble at the vicinity of Island City Mall
and along JA Clarin Street. Street Dancing will jump-off at 9:30
am and will pass JA Clarin-CPG Avenue-Tamblot-Torralba Street,
entering the backgate of the CPG Sports Complex. The route is
estimated to be 4.5 kms.
The full performance of nine contingents will be followed by a
Blood Compact Reenactment directed by internationally-acclaimed
artist, Lutgardo Labad. A 10-minute pyrotechnic display will be
next.
The “Battle of the Bands” Grand Finals with renowned Pupils Band
guesting the show will conclude the whole-day festivity.
At the helm of all these preparation is City Mayor Dan Neri Lim,
BSFI Chairman with Carmen Gatal, Chairman of the Street Dancing
Committee and Loreto M. Palapos, Executive Director. (BSFI

Medical Mission wraps up today
July 7, 2006
After servicing some 350 hernia, goiter, cyst and dental patients
and providing some 2000 calibrated eyeglasses to optic patients,
the Medical Mission which started July 5, 2006 is set to wrap up
today.
This was bared by Francisca Baluyot, Consultant of Bohol Health
and Social Services Office, who spearheads the Mission.
The service-oriented activity is supposedly held in a
fully-equipped floating hospital “but did push through as planned
due to chance occurrence of typhoon which affected the country
recently”, Mrs. Baluyot explained. The vessel cannot cross towards
here given the unpleasant weather condition, she added.
The Gov. Celestino Gallares Memorial Hospital for the surgery of
hernia, goiter and cyst patients, Bohol Cultural Center for the
giving of calibrated eyeglasses to optic patients and the
Governor’s Mansion for the dental operation were the immediate
resort for venue.
Fourteen doctors and nurses from the United States of America
(USA) and about fifty support staff from the province involve in
the undertaking.
The Medical Mission, in consonance with the Sandugo-TBTK
Celebration, is made possible through the efforts of the Bohol
Medical Society in partnership with the Provincial Government of
Bohol. (David S. Maulas)

In a bid to provide youth an avenue to express themselves through
music, Sandugo Festival breaks new grounds by staging the “Battle
of the Bands” at the Tagbilaran City Tourist Port.
Slated from July 16 to 23, the “Battle of the Bands” aims to
develop homegrown talents and encourages youth to explore the
musical field instead of devoting idle time to non-productive
activities.
The competition caters to amateur and professional bands of all
genres. Band members, minimum of four, must all be of Boholano

members qualify if they have a minimum residency in Bohol for at

“Showdown of Champions” to cap Sandugo Street Dancing 18th year
June 1, 2006
On its eighteenth year of enduring tradition, the Sandugo Festival
braces for yet another milestone as it sets to bring in the Street
Dancing Champions of other provinces’ festivals in July, dubbing
it as the “Showdown of Champions”.
Impressed by their towering rendition last year, the “Showdown of
Champions” will again parade the Street Dancing Champs of
festivals’ Masskara (Bacolod City), Dinagyang (Iloilo City),
Atiatihan (Kalibo, Aklan), Mantawi (Mandaue City), and Yagyag (Sibulan,
Oriental Negros) in a non-contest setting. Courted to join this
year’s elite performers are grand winners of Dalit Festival (Tangub
City) and Lanzones Festival (Camiguin).
To serve as local counterparts depicting Bohol’s Sandugo Festival,
participation of LGU’s, schools, and institutions in the province
are being sought. As of this time, only the town of Calape and
Panglao have signified their interest. Considering the substantial
exposure the event can offer, however, more local entries are
expected.
Tailing the main performers during the street performance are
various groups from public and private schools, organizations,
business establishments, balikbayans, families and clans with
their self-choreographed steps and portrayals, and artistically
fashioned costumes. This novel idea came after the meetings and
dialogues with organizers of other festivals.
The procession of well-designed floats will also add color to the
parade. The initial list includes the floats of Miss Bohol Sandugo,
Miss Bohol International, Mrs. Bohol International, and Miss Gay
Bohol Sandugo. With its entailing publicity, company-sponsored
floats are likely to join.
To afford a greater number of spectators, City Mayor Dan Neri Lim,
Chairman of the Bohol Sandugo Foundation, Inc. (BSFI), opts to
lengthen the usual route of the street dancing. While finality is
not reached, tentative route will start from IBT to City Hall-JACalrin-CPG
Avenue-Tamblot Street-Torralba Street and end in CPG Sports
Complex.
Individuals and firms are enjoined to participate in the street
dancing and/or display floats. They may register at the BSFI
Secretariat, 3/F New City Hall Building or call 411-5160. (BSFI
Secretariat/David S. Maulas)
Sandugo Fest to showcase country’s best yields
May 24, 2006
Adding to the festive mood of Sandugo Celebration in July,
top-of-the-line products of Bohol and of neighboring provinces
will be featured during the month-long Product Fairs and
Expositions in strategic areas of the city.
As this year’s celebration is coinciding with the 3rd Global
Homecoming of Boholanos (Tigum Bol-anon Tibuok Kalibutan), the
Bohol Sandugo Foundation, Inc. (BSFI) mapped out this shift from a
province to a nation-wide scale to afford balikbayans with
country’s finest yields without having to leave the province.
The Agri-Fair with its display of locally produced agricultural
products will be held at the Agricultural Promotions Center and
New City Hall Compound. Davao’s walingwaling, General Santos’
tuna, and Camiguin’s lanzones are a few attractions. To propagate
information on the newest innovation in agriculture, a Skills
Training for the exhibitors will be spearheaded by the Department
of Agriculture Provincial Director Nunila Pinat, Chairman of the
Committee on Agri-Fair.
“No fly-by-night exhibitors and strictly no ‘Ukay-ukay’ in the
Trade Fair” bared by its Chairman, Mr. Albert Yap. To be placed
along the Tagbilaran City Tourist Port, Trade Fair will
accommodate some 20 well-built stalls to market quality arts and
crafts only. Transactions with experienced marketers from Mindanao
and other interested parties are on-going.
Displayed beside the Trade Fair, the Food Fair will be exclusive
to established restaurants and food chains. This is to ascertain
delectable dishes are served especially that a number of tourists
and balikbayans are expected. The Food Fair is likewise chaired by
Mr. Yap.
While Agri, Trade and Food Fairs Opening will still be on July 1,
City Mayor Dan Neri Lim, BSFI Chairman, assures to construct
well-designed booths to accommodate all these exhibitors.
Meanwhile, the Department of Trade and Industry, headed by
Regional Director Asteria Caberte and Provincial Head Ma. Elena
Arbon, will also mount the Sandugo Regional Product Showcase
themed “Pride of the Islands, beyond boundaries”. Slated at the
Island City Mall on July 20-23, this will be participated in by
four provinces comprising the region namely, Cebu, Bohol, Oriental
Negros, and Siquijor. The event is projected to forge market
linkages and business relationships among participants.
Interested individuals and firms who could sustain the month-long
Product Marketing may inquire at the BSFI Secretariat, 3/F New
City Hall Building. (BSFI Secretariat/David S. Maulas)
Sandugo Street Dancing 2006
May 18, 2006
Anchored on the theme “Transcending Boundaries”, approximately 40
groups are eyed to participate in this year’s Sandugo Street
Dancing Festival. Bohol Sandugo will again make a mark in its
18-year history with the most number of participants to dance in
the main thoroughfares in Tagbilaran City.
To comprise the bulk of participants are non-competing groups
which will come from public and private schools, organizations,
business establishments, balikbayans and clans. As participation
is a non-competitive huge expense is avoided. The concept received
positive responses from heads of institutions during a meeting
with them early March this year. The Street Dancing, routing the
major streets of the city, is seen to provide public and private
institutions a venue for promotional mileage.
The Street Dancing will show some variations in depicting the
Blood Compact. Showcasing Bohol’s cultural ingenuity and
creativity through dance theater will have its revival.
Communication has already been made to prospective contestants and
visits to the local governments to seek their support have already
started.
A milestone in the Street Dancing is the participation of the
Champions of other provinces’ festivals as guest performers. This
novel idea, which was initiated last year with the coming of
Masskara (Bacolod City), Dinagyang (Iloilo City), Atiatihan (Kalibo,
Aklan), Mantawi (Mandaue City), and Yagyag (Sibulan, Oriental
Negros), will again be a main feature of the festival. Arrangement
are being made to also invite the grand winner of Lanzones
Festival (Camiguin) and Dalit Festival (Tangub City).
To make the ambitious endeavor of creating a national record
possible, the Bohol Sandugo Foundation Inc. chaired by Mayor Dan
Neri Lim and co-chaired by Governor Erico Aumentado has tapped all
resources it could muster. The Committee on Street Dancing is
headed by Ms. Carmen Gatal.
Firms, LGU’s, NGO’s, schools, socio-civic organizations, clans,
and various establishments are enjoined to participate the Street
Dancing. Inquiries may be addressed to Bohol Sandugo Foundation,
Inc. (BSFI) Secretariat at 3/F New City Hall Building. (BSFI
Secretariat/David S. Maulas)
Sandugo Festival groundwork laid
May 15, 2006
Two months before the annual Sandugo Festival to unfold in July,
strenuous preparation spearheaded by the Bohol Sandugo Foundation
Inc. (BSFI) is on full swing. Coinciding with this year’s
celebration is the global homecoming of Boholanos dubbed as Tigum
Bol-anon Tibuok Kalibutan (TBTK) which is expected to draw in
hundreds of Boholanos abroad. With this as an expectation, this
year’s edition promises to be several notches higher.
Among the accustomed line up of activities include the Agri, Food,
and Trade Fairs which showcase Bohol’s artistry and creativity
though its distinct products and the month-long Nightly
Presentation which would sustain Sandugo revelry after sundown;
all these happening at the world-class City Tourist Port.
As an offshoot of the successful, jampacked pioneering, the
Tagbilaran City Pop Music Festival, presenting original
composition composed and interpreted by local talents, will have
its year two. Likewise, the famed Search for Miss Bohol Sandugo
continues, and hopes to produce another Ana Mariz Igpit, the
reigning Miss Bohol Sandugo and Binibining Pilipinas World.
Anchored with this year’s theme “Transcending Boundaries”, the
BSFI never ceases to explore new horizons. Breakthrough activities
such as Little Big Sandugo Star, Ginoong Bohol Sandugo, and Little
Miss Bohol Sandugo will have their debuts at the heart of family
entertainment, Island City Mall Activity Center.
Aligned with the celebration, Boholanos who have excelled in their
field of endeavor will be awarded in the Ten Outstanding Boholanos
All-over the World (TOBAW). TBTK activities such as the Mrs. Bohol
International, Miss Bohol International, Group Tours, Youth Camp
specifically tailored for young balikbayans involving the much
vaunted Heritage and Eco-Challenge, and performances by Boholano
talents abroad are scheduled. Arrangement for the Economic Forum
which is expected to be graced by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo
is likewise done.
To cap the festivity is the Street Dancing Extravaganza divided in
two categories: the Contest and Non-Contest. The Contest category
will be contended by Bohol-based delegation while the Non-Contest
will bring in the Champions of other province’s festivals as Guest
Performers, which was preluded last year with the participation of
Masskara (Bacolod City), Dinagyang (Iloilo City), Atiatihan (Kalibo,
Aklan), Mantawi (Mandaue City), and Yagyag (Sibulan, Oriental
Negros). Public and private schools, organizations, business
establishments and clans are also joining the merriment in the
streets.
At the helm of laying the groundwork is the Chairman of the
Foundation, City Mayor Dan Neri Lim and Co-Chairman Emeritus,
Governor Erico B. Aumentado. To further the efficacy of task
delivery, two groups were created, one based on the City Hall
focused on Sandugo activities while the other based on the Capitol
focused on the TBTK; both of which coordinated by Loreto M.
Palapos, the Executive Director. (BSFI Secretariat/David S.
Maulas)
